Tell Tale Signs You Need to Replace Your Plumbing

Feb 07, 2020

While your plumbing keeps appliances like your dishwasher, toilet, and faucets functioning properly, it can go through some wear and tear. However, sometimes it’s hard to tell whether the wear and tear can be fixed with a quick repair or the plumbing needs to be replaced entirely. To offer some guidance, the pros at Manzo Plumbing have come up with a list of tell-tale signs you need to replace your plumbing!

1. Outdated Hardware

First on our list of signs you need to replace your plumbing is the presence of leaks. If you notice your faucet leaks often or your showerhead rusts up and does not work efficiently, now might be a good time to consider replacing them. While replacement takes up more time and effort, it certainly prevents other problems in the future such as leaks and water pressure issues. If ignored for long, outdated hardware can also be dangerous—rusting or broken metal bits can easily get caught in your water stream and might just end up in the glass of water you’re about to drink!

When looking for new hardware, consider ENERGY STAR appliances—these appliances are more energy-efficient and will save you some money on your water bill!

2. Mold

One of the most obvious signs you need to replace your plumbing is mold. Simply put, where there’s moisture there’s the potential for mold. Therefore, you will most likely find it in damp places such as your kitchen or bathroom. If you notice mold growth in these places, especially in areas such as your ceiling (where moisture or water shouldn’t be), you might be having issues with your plumbing. Pipes might be leaking without you even knowing, ultimately increasing the moisture content in your home and leading to mold growth.

3. Constant Leaks

According to the Environmental Protection Agency , household leaks account for 10,000 gallons of water wasted. Leaks can not only be wasteful and expensive but incredibly frustrating to deal with. If you’re dealing slow-draining clogs, or leaky bathtub or toilet bases, you can find temporary solutions. For clogs you can use drain snakes, plungers or baking soda and vinegar. For base leaks, you will need to add caulking to properly seal the hardware. However, these solutions are not long-term. As such, if you find leaks in these places once again, it’s time to consider replacing these appliances.

4. Water Quality Issues

If your hot water has a rusty color for prolonged periods, your water heater might be corroding and rusting up. Your water heater has rods called sacrificial anodes, which are made of steel and covered in zinc, aluminum or magnesium. Any bacteria or corrosive materials in the tank are attracted to these rods or anodes and won’t make it through the pipes. However, as your water heater ages and goes through wear and tear, so do the rods. Once the rods stop doing their job, your water could become foul-smelling and rusty. It’s a good idea to consider replacing your water heater, especially if it is significantly older model.
