How to Save on Your Water Bill When Entertaining Guests

Dec 27, 2019

With the Christmas holidays only a week away, you might one of the many homeowners preparing their homes for guests. Since you will have more people in your home, it’s understandable that your appliances will be used more frequently. However, that isn’t a reason for your water bill to spike up and eat a chunk out of your wallet. That is why the pros at Manzo Plumbing have prepared a list of tips to help you save on your water bill when you’re entertaining your guests.

According to the Environmental Protection Association , the average household’s water leaks can account for 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year. With increased water use during the holidays, this number might go up. To prevent this from happening, it’s important you inspect your household appliances for any leaks. Here are some places you should look for water leaks:

Toilet leaks could be happening for various reasons, but the most common one is a deteriorated flapper. A flapper is the seal between the toilet tank and bowl and when you pull the flush lever, the flapper lifts to let water into the bowl. However, if it is old or worn out, the water might continue to drip into the bowl long after you have flushed it. The solution is to get a new flapper from your nearest home improvement store and replace it , which can be done quickly and easily.

A leaking showerhead is a common bathroom problem, but it can be fixed quickly. Tighten the showerhead to the stem and if that doesn’t help, try using some Teflon tape to secure the connection between the stem and showerhead.

You might be dealing with faucet leaks in your bathroom or kitchen. Usually, these leaks are caused by old and worn out gaskets, washers or cartridges. You can easily find replacements in home improvement stores—just be sure to find the same brand as your faucet!

With more people in the house, there will be frequent showers. Make sure you instruct everyone that the number of bathrooms are limited and so is the water supply! Take shorter showers yourself and let everyone else know that they should shorten their showers too.

Holiday dinners are fun – but cleaning up afterwards isn’t. Your dishwasher certainly makes the job a lot easier, but it is important you fully load it. Your dishwasher is a water-saving alternative to hand washing dishes, and it is more likely to save water and use it efficiently if it is completely loaded. If you want to take additional steps to conserve water, skip the pre-rinse and instead scrape all of the food scraps into the trash.
