Clogged and backed up drains around your home can be incredibly frustrating to deal with. However, it’s also relatively easy with the right tools and information! To help you out, the pros at Manzo Plumbing and Heating, Inc. have come up with a list of ways to unclog drains around your home, so you can stay clog-free!
Your bathtub drain can easily get clogged up with hair and soap scum. You will notice it’s become clogged when the water takes longer to drain away when you’re taking a shower or a bath. It’s messy business, but it’s easy to troubleshoot. Here are some ways you can unclog your bathtub drain:
Usually, if the clog is near the surface of the drain, you can just reach in and pull everything out. It’s gross, but it works. Remove the stopper and simply use a gloved hand to remove any hair or soap scum that is near the surface of the drain. To prevent any hair from clogging up the drain in the future, use a hair catcher. This device is inexpensive and is a great way to stop hair from clogging up the drain.
This mixture is great for unclogging drains of any kind. Pour a cup of vinegar and baking soda down the drain and follow it up with half a gallon of hot water. Let the mixture sit overnight and check to see if your bathtub is draining properly or not.
A drain claw is an inexpensive tool that looks a little like a wire with the hook at the end. This is helpful if the clog has made its way a few inches deeper in the drain. Simply insert the claw until it hits the drain tap. Push it through the drain tap and use a back and forth motion to pull out the clog.
One of the best ways you can unclog your sink drain is by using a standard, cup-shaped plunger. A plunger with an extended flange is usually meant for toilets—however, if you invert the flange back into the cup, you can create a cup plunger for yourself. To remove the clog with a plunger, fill up the sink with a few inches of water. Then use the cup of the plunger to form a tight seal on the surface of the drain. Use sharp up and down motions so the plunger can effectively pull out the clog that is bothering you.
Unclogging your toilet drain is a particularly messy business. However, there are many ways you can unclog your toilet:
Be sure to use a plunger with an extended flange—the cup shaped plunger we mentioned above is only good for sink and bathtub drains. The extended flange is good for toilet clogs as the narrow shape forms a tight seal around the base of the toilet.
If you want to take the DIY route, you can fashion an unclogging tool with wire from a coat hanger. This tool is better for clogs caused by things like toilet paper, flushable wipes etc. Straighten the wire out and wrap a rag around one end. Insert this end of the wire into the toilet and push it into the drain. Once it is in there, push out whatever obstruction is blocking the toilet. If this method works, the water in the bowl will start to drain away.
A chemical drain cleaner should be the last resort as it can corrode your pipes and be harmful to you. Make sure you get a cleaner that is okay to use in toilets.
